內容簡介

Renowned for its successful mergers between Jazz and World Music, Jean-Marc Padovani pays tribute to the great jazz drummer Paul Motian (Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Charles Lloyd ...), disappeared in 2011, and with whom he had the chance to play in 1996.

How to celebrate Paul Motian, and the Armenia of his origins it evokes in most of his compositions, when saxophonist and Occitan? To this question, Padovani responds with great musicality and a rare elegance: saxophone (s) and duduk (Didier Mal-herbe from Hadouk Trio ) unite in melodies that evoke the Jazz as well as Armenia, rhythmic turns as inventive as robust - Claude Tchamitchian (cb), Paul Rousseau (piano) and the breathtaking bat-tery Ramon Lopez). Beyond a very successful trib-ute, this album reveals a large group again played with a great art of the game borders and directo-ries.

"On the invitation of the Nîmes jazz festival in 1996, I gathered an original quartet with Paul Motian on drums, the double bass player Jean-François Jenny-Clarke and the pianist Jean-Marie Machado. During a meal, Paul speaks to me about his Armenian origins. In the repertory that we play together, he particularly likes these moments of modal music largely inspired of my occitan roots. That's how appears in our mind and composition: the doudouk, emblematic instrument of Armenian music… magic mo-ments, but time flies too fast! JF left us first. Then Paul more recently.

With this splendid quintet on this record, I've tried to give a new breath to the music and esthetics of Paul Motian. I have tried to draw him from a too fast lapse of memory, the one who, from Bill Evans to Keith Jarrett, including Charlie Haden's "Release Music Orchestra", has travelled through the complete history of contemporary jazz."
