內容簡介
The artist’s first catalogue in five years, Chen Ching-Yuan: Paintings 2011-2016, published by TKG+, debuts in September, 2016. His oil-on-canvas oeuvre is permeated with smoldering poetics reminiscent of the 18th- and 19th-century European classicism. Cryptic brushstrokes portray indistinct contours of human figures, while a dreary palette conjures a mythological or allegorical ambience. In a seemingly miniature world of painting, Chen Ching-Yuan has constructed a micro-universe that defies the temporal and spatial confines. The portal of this micro-universe is a wormhole, through which figures, objects, narratives arrive and dwell on the canvas. Suggestive of history, those remnants are traces layered by the artist’s brush, because for him, “Pieces of history are conveyed directly through the nature of the painting. I attempt to render the social atmosphere of the times that envelop individual senses, or to express a more fundamental struggle and contradiction as well as to point out the homogeneity that exists in human history. A fable of individuals and the collective is narrated through these scenes without a definitive link.”

1984年生於台南，畢業於台北藝術大學美術創作研究所，曾獲2008年台北藝術大學美術創作卓越獎及2009年高雄美術獎首獎。作品常藉由捕捉主體在面對無法掌握的巨大壓力，而表現猶疑不定、進退兩難的細微感，進而探討創作者與社會環境的關係，並隱喻現代人無法逃脫環境的真實感。重要個展包括：「What am I? If I can’t be yours」，TKG+，台北（2016）；「命名未來」，伊通公園，台北（2015）；(flare-s)，TKG+ Projects，台北（2013）；「Staggering Matter」，TKG+，台北（2011）；「STATE OF_陳敬元個展」，台新銀行文化藝術基金會，台北（2010）；「液態島嶼」，非常廟藝文空間，台北（2009）。也曾參與各項國際展覽：第八屆亞太當代藝術三年展（2015）；曼徹斯特亞洲藝術三年展（2014）；「首屆CAFAM未來展：亞現象．中國青年藝術生態報告」，中央美術學院美術館，北京（2012）。

Chen Ching-Yuan
Born in Tainan, Taiwan in 1984, Chen Ching-Yuan graduated from the School of Fine Arts of the Taipei National University of the Arts. Chen was awarded the Outstanding Art Prize at the Taipei National University of the Arts in 2008, and the Kaohsiung Award’s first prize in 2009. His work captures the nuanced perceptions of humanity under insurmountable pressure, in dilemmas, or in doubt, and further examines the relationship between the artist and his social context, while inferring the reality that man cannot escape his environment. His notable solo exhibitions include What am I? If I can’t be yours, TKG+, Taipei, Taiwan (2016); Un titled, ITPARK, Taipei, Taiwan (2015); (flare-s), TKG+ Projects, Taipei, Taiwan (2013); Staggering Matter, TKG+, Taipei, Taiwan (2011); STATE OF _, Taishin Bank Foundation for Arts and Culture, Taipei, Taiwan (2010); and The LiQUiD STATE, VT Artsalon, Taipei, Taiwan (2009). He has also participated in international exhibitions and biennials, including the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia (2015); Asia Triennial Manchester, Manchester, UK (2014); and the 1st CAFAM．Future Exhibition, CAFA Art Museum, Beijing, China (2012).
