內容簡介
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is a novel about the responsibilities that follow creation-and the cost of refusing them. This Clearview Large Print Edition presents the 1831 revised text, rather than the materially different first edition of 1818. It identifies that choice in the book's publisher notes and draws its reading text from the retained Project Gutenberg edition of the revised novel.
The story begins with Robert Walton, an ambitious explorer writing home from a voyage into the Arctic. When his expedition encounters Victor Frankenstein, Walton becomes the listener to an account of extraordinary ambition and devastating loss. Victor's pursuit of the origins of life produces a being he cannot bring himself to care for. What follows is both a pursuit across landscapes and a struggle over who must answer for what has happened.
Shelley gives the Creature a voice of his own. His account of learning, loneliness, exclusion, and the desire for companionship complicates Victor's version of events. The novel asks readers to consider the relationship between appearance and character, the obligations of a maker toward a dependent being, and the difference between explaining an act and excusing it. Its changing narrators leave room for disagreement: sympathy for one speaker does not require accepting everything that speaker says.
Readers who know Frankenstein chiefly through film adaptations will encounter a different experience here. The novel's force lies in its letters, recollections, arguments, and descriptions as well as its dramatic events. Walton's aspirations frame Victor's history; the Creature's account interrupts and challenges it. The name Frankenstein belongs to Victor, while the being he creates remains unnamed. Reading the complete novel makes these distinctions-and the competing claims of its voices-part of the experience rather than background information.
This edition includes the four opening Walton letters and all twenty-four chapters of the retained reading text, continuing through the novel's final scene. Historical language and wording are preserved. The publisher notes distinguish the work's first publication in 1818 from the 1831 revision reproduced here and identify the source used for comparison. They also describe the digital and AI-assisted production work and the publisher's responsibility for the edition. This is a reading edition, with concise production and source notes; it is not presented as a critical edition with an extensive scholarly apparatus.
The Clearview hardcover uses a 7 by 10 inch trim and approximately 18-point Atkinson Hyperlegible Next body type on approximately 27-point baselines. Ragged-right paragraphs and line endings without automatic word division give the prose a consistent, spacious setting. The larger type supports an unhurried encounter with Shelley's long sentences, the movement between narrators, and the details that can disappear behind the familiar image of a cinematic monster.
Frankenstein rewards both a first reading and a return to a book remembered imperfectly. It offers substantial material for discussion about scientific ambition, isolation, education, family, responsibility, and revenge. Readers can follow it as a Gothic narrative while also attending to the difficult questions its speakers raise about recognition and care. This edition is intended to make that complete reading experience available in a clearly identified version and a generous large-print format.
