When someone dies by suicide, finding the right words to help a child understand what has happened can feel incredibly difficult.
The Biggest Brightest Star is a gentle, compassionate picture book created to help adults begin that conversation with honesty, kindness and love.
Through simple, child-friendly language and comforting illustrations, the story explains that sometimes a person can experience a sadness that feels so big and heavy that they believe it will never go away. It gently introduces what it means when someone dies by suicide, while reassuring children that the person was loved and that their death was not because those around them didn't try to help.
The book then helps children understand their own feelings of grief and loss, showing them that sadness can come and go and that it is okay to miss the person they love. It also gently explains what happens after someone dies, including funerals, burial and cremation, using clear language designed to make unfamiliar experiences a little easier to understand.
Children are encouraged to remember the person they have lost and are given space to draw, write or add photographs, creating a personal place for their memories, thoughts and feelings.
Written by bereaved mum Sharren Bridges after losing her teenage daughter, Jen, to suicide, The Biggest Brightest Star grew from Sharren's own experience of having to explain Jen's death to a six-year-old child.
