The Name the Earth Remembered

Some names are written in history books. Others are carried by the earth.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Lina lives in a world determined to tell her who she is-and, more dangerously, who she is allowed to become. Across the Americas, Indigenous girls and women are being separated from their languages, traditions, families, and ways of knowing. Governments and institutions call it education, civilization, and progress. But beneath those words lies something far more devastating: an attempt to make entire cultures disappear.

Lina is small in a world of enormous forces. Yet she begins to understand that survival does not always look like rebellion. Sometimes it is a name remembered when someone demands another. A story whispered when speaking it aloud is forbidden. A seed carried in a pocket. A song held silently until it is safe to sing again.

Inspired by the history of Indigenous women and communities who preserved culture through generations of colonization, forced assimilation, displacement, and erasure, The Name the Earth Remembered is a historical reimagining of the Thumbelina fairy tale-and a story about what it means to belong to a people, a place, and yourself.

As Lina moves through a world that repeatedly tries to rename and reshape her, she discovers that identity can be threatened without being extinguished. Culture survives in ordinary acts: in hands that remember how to make, voices that remember how to speak, elders who remember what came before, and children who carry those memories forward.

Tender, lyrical, and grounded in history, The Name the Earth Remembered explores cultural survival without reducing Indigenous people to their suffering. It honors resistance not only in its most visible forms, but in the quieter work of remembering, teaching, protecting, and continuing.

Part of Sara Madden's Rewoven Fairy Tales, the novel serves as the fiction companion to Women & Culture: The Americas and Beyond in the Hidden Histories of Women series. It invites young readers to encounter difficult history through an intimate human story while asking enduring questions about memory, identity, belonging, and who gets to decide which stories survive.

For readers of historical fiction, feminist history, Indigenous history, culturally grounded fairy-tale retellings, and stories about girls who discover that being small has never meant being powerless.

They tried to rename her. The earth remembered who she was.
