There is a text message in this book that I never sent.
I wrote it on a night when I had nothing left. I was a school leader who had spent years being everything to everyone, and I had finally hit the place where there was no more of me to give out.

Everything to Everyone, All at Once is about what happens when dedication quietly becomes self-erasure. It is about the impossible math of leadership in education and in every other job built on care: the workload that never ends, the guilt of never doing enough for students, for staff, for your family, for yourself. It is about moral injury. It is about compassion fatigue. And it is about the slow, disorienting loss of knowing who you are when you are not being useful to someone.
This is not a burnout book with a five-step recovery plan. I do not have one, and I do not trust anyone who says they do.
What I have instead is Custos Viae. Latin for "guardian of the path."
Not a framework. Not a checklist. A personal philosophy built out of the wreckage of my own collapse. In these pages I introduce five Custos, five guardians of the beliefs I refuse to hand over to any job, any title, or any system that rewards martyrdom and calls it strength. They are mine, forged in a specific struggle, and I am not asking you to adopt them. I am asking you to find yours.
Because here is the part nobody says out loud in staff meetings: the systems we serve will take everything we offer. They will always take everything we offer. The boundary has to come from us.
This book is for you if:
- You are a teacher, principal, nurse, social worker, pastor, therapist, manager, or caregiver who cannot remember the last time you were off duty
- You have confused your worth with your usefulness
- You have been called dedicated so many times it started to feel like a trap
- You want to stay in the work without disappearing inside it
I will not promise the work gets easier. It does not. But it can get truer.
Strength was never martyrdom. Strength is guarding what matters most: your values, your relationships, your health, your purpose, your one life.
You are allowed to still be in there.
