He discovers that Eric's writing affected others more than he might have known. Eric meets Joe Robinson, a retired janitor in Nebraska. Joe kept in touch with Eric for a decade, failing to mention that his son, who was Eric's first pen pal, had died of tuberculosis years earlier. Eric's letters had become Joe's lifeline through unbearable grief.

Ditto's struggle comes from within, dealing with Eric's absence and the pain of losing someone irreplaceable. Yet as Ditto travels and connects with each person Eric touched, he understands that Eric's legacy is not confined to memory. Eric's kindness touched many people, including the coroner, janitor, mine owner, and disabled children, showing how he brought them together and enriched their lives. The motorcycle accident that opens the novel becomes the catalyst for Ditto's final transformation. He's in the hospital recovering with a new prosthetic leg. He and Joe decide to build a motorcycle, which helps them find a shared purpose instead of grieving alone.
