內容簡介

Christopher Nolan spent a quarter of a billion dollars to film the oldest story in the world, and then, scene by scene, he changed it. This is the book that explains every change and shows you how each one was made: a choice-by-choice reading of the film against Homer, grounded in the record of how the picture was actually shot.

The hero who once boasted of his cunning now flinches from it. The goddess who guided him wears the face of a girl his own army killed. The Trojan Horse burns on the beach like something dropped out of a later and more terrible century. Everyone who buys a ticket already knows how it ends. Almost no one leaves the theater knowing what Nolan altered on the way there, or why a story three thousand years old should suddenly ache like a confession.

The answers turn out to be visible behind the camera as well as on the screen. A Trojan Horse thirty-five feet tall was built with no wheels, so that the men would have to drag it. Twenty actors and a cinematographer crammed inside it with an IMAX camera and worked the scene out with no storyboard at all. Anne Hathaway learned to weave on historical looms. Bill Irwin ran the Cyclops by hand inside a real cave in the Peloponnese, and the black volcanic sand of Iceland stood in for the country of the dead. Every one of those decisions turns out to be an argument about the poem, made in wood and light instead of words.

Reweaving the Odyssey takes the film apart and holds every choice up against Homer: how a guilt that Homer's Odysseus never carried turns an adventure into a reckoning; what the film gains by grounding its gods in weather and grief; what it loses when it spares its queen the sight of the hanged maids; and how the dog, the scar, the great bow, and a single unguarded word, "dad," end up carrying more of the film's heart than any of its monsters. Reaching back through three thousand years of translation and retelling, from the blind singers Homer himself inherited to Emily Wilson's "complicated man," it proposes a way of reading it calls the loom: the idea that a story stays alive only by being unpicked and rewoven, and that the test of any new version is not whether it is faithful but whether the change is true. From the Cyclops's cave to the country of the dead to the bed that cannot be moved, it follows Odysseus all the way back to the water, and to the question on which the whole film turns, whether a man who helped break the world can be forgiven, and whether this telling has earned the grace it finally grants him.

It is for the moviegoer who left the cinema still arguing, for anyone who has loved Homer since school, for the book club and the seminar and everyone who has ever wondered why we keep telling the same few stories forever. Read it beside the film; keep it beside the poem. An independent, unauthorized work of criticism, it is not affiliated with or endorsed by the filmmakers or any studio.
