The Accents of Faith: Why Morality Is Older Than God, and What That Means for All of Us
ACCENTS OF FAITH
內容簡介
The moral sense came first. Religion came after. The Accents of Faith begins with a deceptively simple observation: a Muslim prostrating in Istanbul, a Catholic woman counting rosary beads in Rome, a Zen monk sitting in silence in Kyoto, and a Jewish congregation singing Shabbat prayers in Jerusalem are performing radically different rituals under radically different theologies. And yet the body language is nearly interchangeable. The closed eyes, the regulated breath, the posture of receptiveness, the quieting of mental noise, the sense of being less alone. What is actually happening underneath all those differences? After decades of research across evolutionary biology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and anthropology, science has a remarkable answer. Human beings are born with a moral sense. Long before any scripture could reach them, children show early leanings toward kindness and fairness. The great apes from whom we descended show empathy, reconciliation, and a rudimentary sense of fairness. Across enormously different cultures, the same moral intuitions recur so consistently that they look less like cultural inventions and more like features of the underlying human architecture. Morality is not a gift from religion. It is older than any scripture, any prophet, any temple.Religion, then, is something else. It is what this book calls a cultural accent: a particular way of speaking a moral language that is already universal. Just as a child born anywhere on earth will learn to speak if given a human community, every known human culture develops practices of moral formation and meaning-making. The specific form, the rituals, the stories, the theology, varies. The underlying moral sense does not. Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, and the other great traditions did not invent the words about care, fairness, and human dignity. They inherited those words and learned to pronounce them with their own emphases and beauty. The Accents of Faith moves through four parts. It traces the evolutionary origins of moral emotion, examines what religion does with the moral architecture it inherits, asks how moral life works when traditional religious frameworks are unavailable or unconvincing, and looks at where secular communities are building moral cultures of their own. Along the way it draws on findings that will surprise many readers: the cardiovascular effects of reciting the Catholic rosary and a Hindu yoga mantra are virtually identical. The brain states of Franciscan nuns in prayer and Tibetan monks in meditation show striking convergence. And communities most effective at sustaining moral behavior share structural features whether or not they invoke God.This is not a book that argues against religion. It is written by a former altar boy and Eucharistic minister who became agnostic, and its relationship to faith is the same one a good biographer has to a complicated subject: honest, curious, and genuinely respectful. A committed Catholic, Muslim, or Buddhist can read every page and find their faith not threatened but illuminated. A committed secularist can find the case for taking religion seriously made on grounds that have nothing to do with accepting its truth claims.Who this book is forThe Accents of Faith is for readers who have wondered why human beings in every culture on earth develop something that looks like religion, what that tells us about what we are, and what we share across all the differences that divide us. It is for believers who want a deeper account of what their faith is doing in their lives. It is for skeptics who want an honest reckoning with why religion is so powerful and so persistent. And it is for anyone who has lost a faith but kept the moral sense, and wondered where that came from. The moral instinct is the language. Religion is the accent. Understanding the difference changes everything.
