B. Traven, born in Germany, lived more than half of his life in Mexico and felt great admiration for its people. Basket of Mexican Short Stories is a testament to this through ten stories that portray the customs, ideas, and conflicts of the country during the first half of the 20th century. These stories present two contrasting perspectives on existence in the world: the pragmatic and sometimes cynical view of the outsider, who represents economic or political interests, and the popular wisdom of Mexicans who face everyday life with humor, cunning, and dignity. Traven's stories range from the absurd to the tragic, portraying the tensions that exist in power, marginalization, justice, and resistance.

作者介紹
B. Traven publicó su primer libro, El barco de la muerte, en 1926. Escribió novelas y guiones cinematográficos, fue fotógrafo, explorador y antropólogo, así como autor de numerosos cuentos, con más de 1500 ediciones en más de 40 idiomas, que han vendido alrededor de 40 millones de ejemplares. Muchas de sus obras fueron adaptadas al cine, entre ellas, en inglés, El tesoro de Sierra Madre, que ganó tres premios Óscar; en alemán, El barco de la muerte, un clásico de culto; y, en español, Macario, el primer largometraje mexicano nominado al Óscar como mejor película en lengua extranjera. Se convirtió en ciudadano mexicano en 1951 y se casó con su agente y traductora, Rosa Elena Luján, en 1957. Falleció el 26 de marzo de 1969 en la Ciudad de México. Traven nació en Alemania en 1882. Hay evidencia de que era hijo ilegítimo del fundador de la gran empresa alemana AEG, Emil Rathenau y una actriz irlandesa, y, por lo tanto, medio hermano de Walther Rathenau, el ministro de Asuntos Exteriores de Alemania en 1922. Tras recorrer el mundo como marinero mercante durante varios años, fue actor, director y autor de cuentos bajo el seudónimo Ret Marut. Después de mudarse a Múnich en 1915, fundó en 1917 la revista anarquista radical Der Ziegelbrenner y participó en el gobierno del consejo bávaro en 1919, que fue brutalmente reprimido y resultó en una sentencia de muerte para Traven, por la cual escapó a Mexico en 1924.
