Mi Nombre Es Celestina / My Name Is Celestina

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

When being a poor, single woman was a stigma, she forged her own destiny and her name became legendary.

THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE MOST FAMOUS MATCHMAKER IN SPANISH LITERATURE.

Salamanca, 15th century. When little Celestina is abandoned by her mother at the home of an old healer, she has no idea that her childhood has been cut short forever. Sancha attends births and abortions, prepares potions to attract men, and collects herbs in the moonlight to make infallible remedies. At her side, the girl begins to discover the secrets of desire and the need women feel to support each other in a man's world. From the most sordid margins of society, Celestina will learn to survive in an era where everything, even what's most sacred, has a price.

La Celestina is undoubtedly one of the most iconic characters in Spanish literature: a cunning, ruthless, and deceitful old woman, whose first name ended up being used to refer to other procuresses. Based on this idea, Desirée Baudel shows us that, before becoming the unscrupulous old woman who went down in history, Celestina was once a young girl and a child, and she does so by offering us a fascinating novel that is also an honest portrait of many other women who refused to accept the rules of a society that condemned them in advance.
