North America's Amazing Mammals: An Encyclopedia for the Whole Family
NORTH AMER AMAZING MAMMALS
內容簡介
North America's Amazing Mammals is the ultimate family-friendly reference to our fascinating fur-bearing cousins. Scientific, accessible, and comprehensive, this fact-filled, vintage-styled wildlife book examines an impressive 378 of North America's most remarkable and familiar mammals, representing Artiodactyla, Carnivora, Cetacea, Chiroptera, Cingulata, Eulipotyphla, Hominidae, Lagomorpha, Marsupialia, Perissodactyla, Pinnipedia, Rodentia, and Sirenia.
Designed as an easy-to-use compendium for the whole family, the book dispenses with the often tedious and unnecessarily graphic biological descriptions found in traditional guidebooks. Instead, it concentrates on the ecology and life history of each species, clearly covering such essential topics as size, coloration, habitat, range, diet, communication, behavior, reproduction, predators, and life span.
The only known animal encyclopedia to include Sasquatch alongside its 378 recognized species entries, North America's Amazing Mammals features approximately 600 old-school black-and-white illustrations; an introduction to mammalian taxonomy; advice for safely and enjoyably observing wild mammals; a discussion of the native or nonnative status of wild horses; and tables of endangered mammals and threats to mammalian life.
Also included are an inventory of useful government websites; a section for maintaining a personal life list; a massive, detailed glossary; a comprehensive index; an extensive bibliography containing some 800 books; and an informative and thoughtful introduction by the author exploring the vital roles mammals play in the global ecosystem and human society.
Dedicated to increasing public awareness of North America's mammals and the importance of wilderness preservation, North America's Amazing Mammals is the product of half a century of firsthand observation, personal experience, and exhaustive research.
This sweeping and intricately researched work examines approximately 83 percent of the mammalian species found in our region, making it a singular reference that will appeal to mammal enthusiasts, families, campers, hikers, tourists, hunters, wildlife conservationists, zoologists, field biologists, and everyone who appreciates the natural world.
