內容簡介
內容簡介 "A master class of the masterworks of Paul Thomas Anderson" (Variety), Adam Nayman's full-color coffee-table book explores the creative journey of the multiple Academy Award-nominated writer and director. Foreword by the Safdie Brothers. "Full of lavish photographs from his best-loved films." --A. Frame Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks is a fact-filled treasure-trove for movie fans. It explores Anderson's career, including the critically acclaimed, award-winning movies Hard Eight (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), There Will Be Blood (2007), The Master (2012), Inherent Vice (2014), Phantom Thread (2017), and Licorice Pizza (2021). This gorgeous book also covers his music videos for Radiohead and his early short films. Anderson's influences; his style; and the recurring themes of alienation, reinvention, ambition, and destiny that course through his movies are analyzed and supplemented by firsthand interviews with his closest collaborators--and illuminated by film stills, archival photos, original illustrations, and an appropriately psychedelic design aesthetic. Anderson has been described as "one of American film's modern masters" and "the foremost filmmaking talent of his generation." He continues to define American cinema's modern masters; his latest epic, One Battle After Another, enters the 2026 Academy Awards as a powerhouse frontrunner with 13 nominations, including Best Director and Best Picture, following a historic six-win sweep at the BAFTAs. Film critics and fans are constantly looking forward to what he might create next and discuss the meaning and technical aspects of his movies and their most famous scenes. Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights, Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will be Blood, and Joaquin Phoenix in The Master are not just memorable movie performances, they are the stuff of Hollywood legend. Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks is a tribute to the dreamers, drifters, and evil dentists who populate his world.

作者介紹 Adam Nayman is a film critic, lecturer, and author based in Toronto. He is a contributing editor for Cinema Scope and a frequent contributor to The Ringer, The New York Times, Sight & Sound, and The Criterion Collection. Nayman is the author of several acclaimed monographs, including The Coen Brothers: This Book Really Ties the Films Together, David Fincher: Mind Games, and Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks. His critical work is celebrated for its deep analysis of modern auteurs, blending academic rigor with accessible, sharp-witted prose. Beyond his books, he lectures on cinema and journalism at the University of Toronto and TMU (formerly Ryerson University). Josh and Benny Safdie are the visionary filmmakers behind the adrenaline-fueled modern classics Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019). Known for their "street-level" realism and high-tension storytelling, they redefined the New York crime thriller before transitioning to independent paths in 2024. Josh Safdie continues his exploration of obsessive characters and frantic pacing as the director of the 2025 2026 awards contender Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet. Benny Safdie has successfully balanced a prolific acting career--appearing in Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer--with his solo directorial debut, the MMA drama The Smashing Machine (2025), starring Dwayne Johnson. The brothers remain foundational figures in 21st-century American independent cinema, and their foreword to Masterworks offers a unique peer-to-peer perspective on the technical and emotional brilliance of Paul Thomas Anderson.
