Gaston Leroux
Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux (1868–1927) was a French journalist, court reporter, film pioneer, and novelist best known for The Phantom of the Opera.
Born in Paris, Gaston Leroux studied law but opted for a career as a correspondent at the Paris newspaper Le Matin. He covered the 1905 Russian Revolution and, most influentially, the dungeons below the Paris Opera House, which once held the prisoners of the radical Paris Commune. Abandoning journalism in 1907 for a career as a novelist, Leroux founded the film production company Société des Cinéromans in order to turn his numerous short stories and dozens of works of fiction into film. In 1909 Leroux was made a Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur.
Alexander Teixeira de Mattos
Alexander Teixeira de Mattos (1865–1921) was a journalist, literary critic, and publisher most widely known as the first English translator of The Phantom of the Opera.
