In New York was his fourth studio album, and it marked a decisive homecoming of sorts: a pilgrimage to the very source of bebop, made possible by his long friendship with the legendary pianist and educator Barry Harris, who had served as Fukui's idol and mentor since their first meeting in 1992. For the sessions, Fukui was joined by two of Harris's own trusted collaborators — bassist Lisle Atkinson and drummer Leroy Williams — lending the record an unmistakable authority and an insider's fluency in the bebop tradition. The programme is a masterclass in repertoire selection: Hot House and Bouncing with Bud pay direct homage to the architects of bop, while All the Things You Are, Embraceable You, and Just One of Those Things showcase Fukui's poetic command of the Great American Songbook. Duke Ellington's Red Carpet adds a touch of swing-era elegance, and the set closes with a deeply felt remake of Fukui's own Mellow Dream — a signature piece revisited with the added weight of New York experience. Fukui passed away in 2016, leaving behind a small but luminous discography; this 180g heavyweight pure vinyl pressing ensures that one of his finest hours receives the sonic treatment it has always deserved.【収録内容】[LP - SIDE A]1.
