This volume reimagines the built environment not as a passive backdrop, but as a contested site where architecture, engineering, climate extremes, energy imperatives, and socio-economic inequalities converge. Sustainability is shown not as a universal mandate, but as a condition continually negotiated across uneven terrains of policy, design, and everyday inhabitation.
Through contributions from leading scholars, the book examines Mediterranean cities to reveal the fractured foundations of the energy transition: fragmented regulations, misaligned certification systems, undervaluation of thermal performance, and urban fabrics that both resist and demand reinvention. Rejecting linear narratives and technocratic reductionism, the volume emphasizes the tensions between techno-optimism and the economic, infrastructural, and cultural inertias that delay transformation. Rather than offering prescriptive closure, it invites readers to grapple with contradictions that render the Mediterranean city both a site of impasse and a laboratory of renewal in the shadow of climate crisis.
Ioannis Vardopoulos studied civil engineering and holds two master's degrees, one in Environmental Protection and Management, and the other in Sustainable Development, along with a doctorate in Applied Urban Sustainability. He is currently a Tenured Public Sector Senior Civil Engineer at Directorate of Technical Services for Buildings in Greece, where he drives sustainability in public building projects. He is also a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Athens and a Visiting Lecturer at the Open University of Cyprus, teaching and conducting high-quality research that addresses key sustainability challenges in the built environment. With over 130 impactful publications and more than 2500 citations, he is featured among the top 2% of the most influential scientists worldwide.
Dr. Constantinos Vassiliades is an Assistant Professor of Architectural Technology and Energy at Neapolis University Pafos in Cyprus, specializing in sustainability and advanced architectural energy technologies. He earned his Diploma in Architectural Engineering with distinction from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece in 2012 (top of his class), and a PhD from the University of Cyprus in 2018 for his research on the integration of photovoltaic and solar thermal systems in building façades. His research and practice focus on energy efficiency, low-ecological-footprint design, and the application of emerging technologies in the built environment, supported by participation and leadership in international projects across Europe and the Mediterranean. He has held visiting research and teaching posts at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden and the University of Naples Federico II in Italy and continues to collaborate with leading institutions worldwide. Dr. Vassiliades has authored numerous publications in high-impact journals and conferences, as well as the handbook Building Integration of Active Solar Systems. He serves on the editorial board of scientific journals, is a qualified building energy efficiency expert, and a member of the Technical Chamber of Cyprus and the Cyprus Architects Association. His work has received multiple international awards, underscoring his commitment to advancing sustainable, interdisciplinary architectural practice.
