Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 at CERN in Switzerland. Since then, he has been a passionate advocate for shared standards, open web access for all, and the power of individuals on the web through his work with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the Open Data Institute and the World Wide Web Foundation. Sir Tim is the recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship, the Turing Award, the Millennium Technology Prize, and the Seoul Peace Prize. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and was appointed to the Order of Merit in 2007 – restricted to only 24 members at any given time, including Sir David Hockney, Sir Roger Penrose, and Sir David Attenborough. He was also named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of the twentieth century.
