內文 : Lord Randall

“Lord Randall” (Anonymous) is a Scottish border ballad, a traditional dialogue ballad. Scholars believe the original source was an Italian ballad, “L’Avvelenato.” The Scottish version of the poem was found in Francis James Child’s famous collection of English and Scottish ballads, published in five volumes from 1882 to 1898. The different versions follow the same general lines—the primary character (in this case Randall, but varying by location) is poisoned, usually by his sweetheart; this is revealed through a conversation between the dying Randall and his mother when he reports on the events and the poisoner.

Lord Randall

“Oh where ha’e ye been, Lord Randall, my son!

And where ha’e ye been, my handsome young man!”

“I ha’e been to the wild wood: mother, make my bed soon,

For I’m weary wi’ hunting, and fain1 wad2 lie down.”

5 “And where gat3 ye your dinner, Lord Randall, my son?

And where gat ye your dinner, my handsome young man?”

“I dined wi’ my true love: mother, make my bed soon,

For I’m weary wi’ hunting, and fain wad lie down.”

“What gat ye to your dinner, Lord Randall my son?

10 What gat ye to your dinner, my handsome young man?”

“I gat eels boiled in broo:4 mother, make my bed soon,

For I’m weary wi’ hunting, and fain wad lie down.”

“What became of your bloodhounds, Lord Randall, my son?

What became of your bloodhounds, my handsome young man?”

15 “O they swelled and they died: mother, make my bed soon,

For I’m weary wi’ hunting, and fain wad lie down.”

“O I fear ye are poisoned, Lord Randall, my son!

O I fear ye are poisoned, my handsome young man!”

“Oh yes, I am poisoned: mother, make my bed soon,

20 For I’m sick at the heart, and I fain wad lie down.”

Ballad

Ballad refers to a narrative poem in short stanzas with or without music. There are three major kinds of ballad: the traditional ballad, a song of anonymous authorship transmitted orally; the broadside ballad, printed and sold on single sheets; the literary ballad, an imitation of the traditional ballad. Death is a common subject, and unhappy or betrayed love appears in many ballads. Usually narrated directly through a conversational form, ballads are structured with repetitions or refrains so that the listener is able to remember the story. “Lord Randall” in many aspects fits well with thesefeatures of a traditional ballad.

Discussion

1. Who are the two people talking in the poem?

2. What happened to Lord Randall?

3. What does the repetition or refrain at the end of each stanza imply?

4. Lord Randall is described as a young man in the poem. What does this suggest?

5. How does Lord Randall react to the fact that he is dying?
