Modern Topics is a reading series designed for ESL/EFL young readers from grade 7 to 12, who have taken basic vocabulary and grammar classes, and are preparing to expand their English abilities to a more advanced level.

Taking into consideration the ESL/EFL students do not have strong spoken English backgrounds before coming to the class, Modern Topics engaged a variety of literature forms, such as essays, fiction and nonfiction short stories, letters, news articles, interviews and journals. This approach exposes students to the diversity of how English is used in real life, and raises students’ interest in studying another subject.
Technology, Health Science, Environment and Humanity Issues, Holidays and Culture, Cities and Travel, Sports and Arts.
The reading passages have been selected for their relevance to everyday contexts and modern topics, such as sports and art, people and culture, cities and travel, environment and humanity, health and technology. This approach develops useful and practical vocabulary, expands students’ common sense, and raises awareness of contemporary issues around the world.

The exercises that accompany each text guide the students through progressive comprehension of the reading passages, diversification and development of vocabulary, review of grammar, discussion, and writing in order to improve their overall English language skills in reading writing, listening and speaking.
